The Happy Prince and Other Tales (Classic Literature With Classical Music. Junior Classics) The Happy Prince and Other Tales (Classic Literature With Classical Music. Junior Classics) These fantasies and true-to-life fables were created by Oscar Wilde for his own sons. Here is the tale of the Prince who is not as happy as he seems, of the Selfish Giant who learns how to love children, and of the Star-Child who suffers bitter trials when he rejects his parents.

Customer Review: There is always some salvation
In these tales, most of them being sad and even very sad, Oscar Wilde looks for a way to save one’s soul in front of the misery of the world. Anyone in society who lives in the upper classes does not necessarily see the ugliness and suffering of the world when one looks at the lower classes. But in these tales the Happy Prince, or the Selfish Giant, or any other character will manage to get salvation out of their upper class blindness, by opening their eyes to misery and suffering and by doing what they can to repair these pains and evils because they will realise they have to feel responsible for the world, because they are more powerful and could easily impose their selfish rule. But the giant will discover nature, if not God, punishes him for his selfishness. The nightingale will try to redeem a young student by giving him a red rose in a season when read roses do not bloom. And yet the student will not get the love he wants because he is nothing but a non-entity for the girl he would like to be loved by. There is also a very sad note in A Devoted Friend and how friendship can become a mask for selfishness, a nice appearance for an ugly and egoistic attitude. Those tales are sad and at the same time they convey a moral full of hope. All is not lost if the Happy Prince can give away his happiness for those who suffer, even if later the powerful of his society will reject him when he does not look happy and beautiful any more

Jazz Icons: Count Basie Live in ‘62

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Jazz Icons: Count Basie Live in 62 Jazz Icons: Count Basie Live in ‘62 A lot of words can be used to describe the performance of the Count Basie Orchestra on Live in ‘62, an hour-long concert recorded in Sweden, but one will suffice: swingin’. No big band, not even the great Duke Ellington’s, ever swung as relentlessly, or effortlessly, as Basie’s various ensembles, and this one is a prime example. Having split up his so-called “Old Testament” band in the early ’50s, Basie was at it again a few years later with this “New Testament” outfit, which featured great players like trumpeters Snooky Young and Thad Jones, trombonist Quentin Jackson, saxophonists Marshal Royal and Frank Wess, the eternal Freddie Green on guitar, and the amazing drummer Sonny Payne. The 11 tunes performed here (and reproduced with surprisingly crisp, clear audio and black & white visuals) include some Basie staples (like Green’s “Corner Pocket” and Basie’s own signature “One O’Clock Jump”), a few jazz classics (”I Got Rhythm,” “Old Man River,” “Stella by Starlight”), and three vocal numbers featuring Irene Reid. Every one of them is a delight, with superb arrangements highlighting the band’s ensemble playing, masterful control of dynamics, excellent soloing, more than a few touches of humor and, of course, that ineffable swing. Tough to pick a particular highlight, but Payne’s lengthy solo spot on “Old Man River” might be it–not only is he a sensational drummer, spinning out rhythms as if they were melodies and never once losing the tempo, but the way he tosses and juggles his sticks is marvelously entertaining. A thorough and informative accompanying booklet more than makes up for the lack of bonus features. –Sam Graham
Customer Review: Count Basie Live in 62
This is a good concert dvd, it has exciting arrangements from slow swing/blues to explosive tempos such as the Old Man River arrangement. As a drummer this is an incredible learning tool to watch and analyse the Great Sonny Payne drive the band with impecable time keeping and excentric showmanship which adds to the excitment. A must have for any drummer who loves Jazz
Customer Review: Classic performance, surprisingly good audio
The Jazz Icons series does a great service by preserving for us an important part of American musical heritage. I’ve been a Basie fan for a long time, and had the opportunity to see the band perform a couple of times with the Count at the helm, so I may be biased, but I think the Basie DVD is the best one of the series that I’ve seen so far. It features some of the Count’s legendary sidemen. To name just a few: Frank Wess and Frank Foster in the sax section, Thad Jones and Snooky Young on trumpet, Sonny Payne on drums, and of course, Freddie Green on guitar.
Sonny Payne is on top of his game and is a delight to watch throughout the performance. Eric Dixon displays his big, warm tenor sax sound on a gorgeous interpretation of “You Are Too Beautiful.” Other tunes feature impressive solo work from Wess, Foster, and Sonny Cohn on trumpet.
Any downside to this performance will be determined by personal taste. For example, the surprisingly up-tempo rendition of “Old Man River” is great, but Payne’s drum solo is long and may try the patience of some listeners. Also, vocalist Irene Reid belts out her tunes with power and conviction, apparently trying to emulate the sound (and even the look) of Ella Fitzgerald, but she will not please everyone. By her third selection, I was getting tired of hearing her repeatedly shout in the same high-impact register instead of getting inventive with the melody.
For a 1962 Swedish Television recording, this session is remarkably well preserved and restored. It’s in black & white, and the lighting is a bit off in some scenes, but the sound is great all the way. This is a collector’s item that will be enjoyed over and over.

Blue

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Blue Blue Third Eye Blind’s second album will go a long way in helping the San Francisco-based band to shed their corporate-rock label. Less grandiose and obvious than their 1997 debut, the elegantly flawed Blue crackles with energy and dark humor, but doesn’t wade in the same pools of gloom and despair as its self-titled predecessor. Frontman Stephan Jenkins has exchanged his intricate stream-of-consciousness musings for more streamlined soulful wordplay. The assertive, inventive guitars recall such big bruisers of yesteryear as Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, but without the heavy-handedness. “Never Let You Go,” the album’s standout, is as catchy as Rick Springfield’s “Jesse’s Girl,” but with a raw edge and a snarling Jaggeresque rap by Jenkins. Smart, poppy, and ironic, Blue more than solidifies Third Eye Blind’s standing as a band on the rise. –Jaan Uhelszki
Customer Review: Poor Third Eye Blind
Their poppy, mainstream debut album established them as the radio-friendly rockers with lyrics so catchy, even your Mom can’t resist (innocently chiming “I took the hit that I was given then I bumped again” never ceases to amuse).

Rare L.A. Tracks: Collection R&B & Doo Wop

Rare L.A. Tracks: Collection R&B & Doo Wop Rare L.A. Tracks: Collection R&B & Doo Wop Customer Review: Excellent amateurs
Beautiful stuff–mainly mid- to late doo-wop by bands and individuals trying hard to break in, and fail. But the tracks by Jesse Belvin, The Charades, and the mysterious Coupons could have and should have been heard everywhere. Driving home on HWY 81 late at night, listening to this stuff unexpectedly on the radio, I felt I was attending a primitive Church of R&B. You can also hear where Frank Zappa heard some of his first epiphanies.

Ultimate Country Party, Vol. 2

Ultimate Country Party, Vol. 2 Ultimate Country Party, Vol. 2 Customer Review: Listen All Day Long
As an owner of the original Ultimate Country Party CD, I was skeptical when I saw the play list, as to whether this one could live up to the standard set by its predecessor. However, one listen through reveals that YES! it is a great listen. What I love about both albums in particular is that they are mixed so well. This album goes from fast to slower songs with out missing a beat. It makes excellent background music at a party (no need to switch discs), perfect car trip music (for people who can’t agree on just one artist), and I love to listen to it at work because the variety of artists keeps me from feeling like I am hearing the same thing over and over again. For ultimate country fans this is a great compilation.
Customer Review: Ultimate Country Party 2
I never bought the first one, but this one is definitely a must buy! Ever since I bought it I can’t stop listening to it. There were only one or two songs I hadn’t heard before, but the rest are popular country songs that will rock any party!

Perhaps my least favorite of the original soundtracks, it’s still a classic. If you are a fan of the original Star Wars movies, you can’t miss owning this CD.
Customer Review: Great Soundtrack
I bought this for a Star Wars birthday party for my 7-year-old son and our whole family really enjoys listening to this. If you’re a Star Wars fan, I’d recommend adding this to your music collection.

Customer Review: So good.
If you like the Get Lifted record and like live music, this DVD is for you. John and his band are slamming and they do a great job of recreating great album moments as well as breathing new life into the arrangements. after the warmup intro, they lay into “Let’s Get Lifted” with a much stronger groove than the album - the DVD is worth it for this track alone.
There’s a nice moment when John sits at the piano and plays excerpts from his collaborations - very cool.
Buy it. Watch it. Love it.
Customer Review: Fantastic
